The original Maritzdaal Farmhouse was built in 1846 and today it comprises a beautifully laid out farm, homestead and sheds. The Farm is located in the fertile Dargle Valley and backs onto the 2nd largest mist belt temperate forest left in KZN. The property has an exclusive jeep track trail through the forest that offers an exceptional glimpse into the resident Birds, Animals and Trees.
The Dargle stream meanders for 2,5kms through the length of the farm and there are a further two streams on the property. An artesian well borehole provides ample good water for irrigation, the homestead and farmyard, via a storage facility situated at an elevation of approx. 40m above the homestead.
The Farm itself is 155,567 Hectares, and is efficiently made up of Timber and Pastures. It is well fenced and is divided into 24 camps that all have access to water via troughs or the streams. Most of the camps are kikuyu pastures, plus there is a 5,3 ha established eragrostis hayfield and a second 5,7 ha block is being re-established to Eragrostis hay. The good rainfall of the area ensures good grazing.
The farm holds a permit to irrigate 13,43 Ha and has water rights to 36,000 cubic metres. There is a permit for 68 ha of Timber, which is mostly E Smithii, with some E Grandis/Nitins and Dunnii. Pinus Patula and Elliottii make up the balance on the higher slopes. The timber is in good rotation and has an extensive road network for access. Over the last few years, growth has yielded very good tonnage. A long haul depot is also established on site.
The main house consists of a large double storey home dating back to 1846. All rooms are spacious with high ceilings. There are four bedrooms, two lounges, and a formal English dining room complete with an adjoining lounge and a log-burning fireplace. There is a modern well- appointed, granite topped country kitchen, with a sunny breakfast nook and a roomy separate scullery and outside laundry.
Entertaining is made easy by the space available to accommodate a crowd either on the deep veranda and adjoining sun-room or by the salt water swimming pool.
Additional accommodation is available in the recently renovated self-catering two bedroom cottage (both en-suite). This property appears on various accommodation portals as “Hydrangea Cottage” and is a good income generator.
There is a second split level cottage that is tucked away in a quiet corner of the garden. This has not been used for a while and awaits renovation. The garden itself is extensive and filled with shrubs, ancient trees, heritage roses, flower beds and a formal vegetable garden with orchard. It has previously been on show.
Further home buildings comprise of garaging for up to 10 vehicles and a magnificent old two level barn with verandah. This could well be used as a Midlands Meander enterprise or a characterful wedding venue.
Through a glade of indigenous bush is the farmstead. It has good infrastructure, comprising a secure 220 sq m tractor shed, six modern stables, a 220 m sq hay shed, two additional yellowwood beamed storage sheds, some old stables and a dairy. There is staff accommodation located in this area as well.
Ownership is assigned in the name of a company (Greenwillow Properties Pty Ltd) that is registered for Vat. The sellers are prepared to sell their interest in the company if a buyer were interested. Maritzdaal Farm is a special property. It offers a very neat working farm and a stunning home and garden in one. Just 11km from Piggly Wiggly on the R103
